Celebrating the 10th anniversary of its Family Food Market, Manassas Park City Schools continues to provide a convenient way for families in need to grocery shop for free. Serving around 250 families each month at Manassas Park High School, this event and its organizers lend a helping hand to people in the community who need it most. Families can shop for a variety of grocery items including pantry staples, canned goods, fruits, and vegetables. The Capital Area Food Bank donates these items while school staff and student volunteers assist with setup and food distribution. Families can also connect with other local resources and nonprofits while shopping.
While parents stand in line, MPCS Family Liaisons have personal conversations with them as they wait. Through these conversations, liaisons can identify McKinney-Vento eligible students, distribute McKinney-Vento brochures, and determine other needs these students may have. “Personalization is so important in their conversations,” emphasized Kelly Brown, Supervisor of Student Services and McKinney-Vento Liaison. Starting with addressing hunger, the MPCS team leverages this event to ensure students are not only fed but also receive the individualized support needed for school success.
