A remarkable student in Richmond, VA, recently graduated from high school despite facing homelessness. His story is an example of his extraordinary resilience and perseverance, and the power of community collaboration. Through the dedicated efforts of Richmond City Schools’ Children and Families in Transition (C-FIT) team, this student received comprehensive support that helped remove barriers to his success. The C-FIT team worked closely with school staff and community organizations to ensure his basic needs were consistently met. This included providing hygiene products, clothing, a duffle bag, household supplies, towels, washcloths, and food cards.
Recognizing the importance of celebrating this milestone, C-FIT also covered the cost of his cap and gown, allowing him to fully participate in graduation. In addition, the student received a thoughtfully curated senior gift bag filled with items to support his transition to higher education. The gift bag included an iPad, Apple Pencil, power bank, Bluetooth speaker, protective case, blanket, journal, water bottle, headphones, store gift card, first aid kit, and a grooming kit. This collaborative effort brought together supports from local organizations such as Commonwealth Catholic Charities (CCC) and the Virginia Home for Boys and Girls. Together, they ensured that the student felt both prepared and supported as he embarks on his next chapter.
