Michelle Swisher, McKinney-Vento liaison for Spotsylvania City Public Schools (SCPS), along with the division’s school social work team, hosted the 14th annual Rock Out, Knock Out Homelessness event in October. Located at the Southpoint Walmart, this event invited Walmart shoppers and other community members to stop by and drop off essential items for students and families experiencing homelessness along with other families living on a low income and struggling to access basic needs.
These items were then transported to fill the shelves at Treasure House, a resource space in SCPS where these students and families can shop once a month for items such as food, toiletries, clothing, and small appliances. Treasure House serves over 1,500 people every quarter, providing families in need with the dignity of shopping for what they need with a variety of options from which to choose. Rock Out, Knock Out Homelessness and Treasure House allow Swisher and the SCPS school social work team to enhance their family engagement efforts, building relationships with parents and connecting students to school.
