Virginia reports graduation rates using two methods:
- The Virginia On-Time Graduation Rate is Virginia’s official graduation rate which expresses the percentage of students in a cohort who earned any Board of Education-approved diploma within four years of entering high school for the first time and has allowances for special education and English Learners whose educational plans allow for additional years in high school.
- The Federal Graduation Indicator is used for federal accountability which expresses the percentage of students in a cohort who earned only a Standard, Advanced Studies, or IB diploma within four years of entering high school for the first time. There are no allowances for special education and English Learners to be counted if they require the additional years in their education plans to graduate.
